Montebello library event is called off MONTEBELLO – A taekwondo demonstration scheduled for Saturday at the Montebello Regional Library has been canceled. For information call (323) 722-6551. Youth program begins Monday WHITTIER – The city’s Whittier Youth Network program will begin Monday at eight schools. The programs will be held from 2:30-5 p.m. for youngsters in second through fifth grades. Cost is $20. Sites include Evergreen, Laurel, Lincoln, Jackson, Leffingwell, Hoover, Longfellow and Murphy Ranch elementary schools. WYN club members participate in a variety of activities and field trips. Youth art classes to start Monday WHITTIER – Youth art classes will begin Monday at the Whittier Community Center, 7630 Washington Ave. The classes include conceptual mixed media and painting technique for children ages 6-9. Parent education classes coming up WHITTIER – “Mommy and Me” parent education classes will begin the week of Sept. 10 at the Whittier Adult School, 9401 S. Painter Ave. Classes include “Parent the Infant,” “Parenting the Toddler,” “Parenting the 2-year-old,” “Parenting the Preschooler,” and “Parenting the Pre-kindergartner.” Children will participate with their parents in activities such as singing, educational games, cooperative play and arts and crafts. Both day and night classes are available Monday through Friday. Cost for a 10-week session is $30 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Thrift shop looks for some help WHITTIER – The Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter is in need of volunteers to staff their thrift shop, Sacks on the Boulevard. Volunteers are needed for Tuesday mornings and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Proceeds go to the shelter, which provides a safe haven for women and children who fled domestic-violence situations. The thrift shop also provides clothing to the women and children in the shelter.
