Body cameras have been in the news this week with big stories in the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, and the cost of storage has been a big a part of the story. I have met with many different customers around evidence storage and the long term costs associated and I often hear that they are “going cloud” because they believe it is less expensive than on-premises storage. Cloud is without a doubt changing the landscape for our apps at home, on our phones, and in the enterprise. There are a lot of situations where cloud is the right choice. Cloud for evidence is more nuanced than lets say, deploying Office 365. Evidence data grows every year and sits unused for most of its lifetime. Evidence video has a shelf life of 3, 5 , or even 20 years or more in some cases. When storing that much data and for that long of a time, you have to think beyond the first 5 years. One of the most common offers I encounter when talking to customers is the “unlimited” per camera plan for body camera storage. This plan sounds like a great deal up front, but when you dig deeper, you quickly find that it is a much more expensive alternative to storing evidence in your datacenter.Lets look at one example of a small city in California. The City of Alameda purchased software and cloud storage for 80 body cameras for $425,000 for 5 years. Each year Alameda will be on the hook to pay $63,000 forever to maintain their body camera video in the cloud.“80 Cameras for $63,000/year FOREVERShareThat is a lot of money for 80 cameras. Imagine if they had 1,000 cameras or even 10,000 cameras. This is the fundamental issue with the currently available cloud offers for body cameras. You are not getting any of the advantages of cloud and you are left with a bill that is too costly for most police departments. Not to mention you are vendor locked-in and the cost to change vendors can be astronomical.Contrast this with a Public Safety Data Lake designed to store, manage and secure ALL your evidence data in an open platform that you own. A Public Safety Data Lake allows you to buy the storage you need when you need it. No long term overpriced contracts. It is open to any evidence you want to store and you are not stuck managing multiple storage platforms for your evidence data.“Join us at EMC World 2016 on Tuesday May 3 @ 1:30 PM to learn more about how to turn your Evidence and Surveillance data into a Data Lake.Share
Roll-out Virtual Agent Frameworks – They support the creation of chatbots, which can also be used in a variety of ways across different functions such as HR, customer service and sales.IT Leadership Can Lead the Charge to Transform with Artificial IntelligenceYour company’s IT strategy has a direct impact on its business outcomes. By focusing on the above areas, you can prepare for the inevitable onslaught of AI projects and set your business up to succeed. For additional resources and tips for IT leaders, Forrester Consulting’s checklist 8 Steps CIOs Must Take to Transform with Artificial Intelligence provides specific recommendations for CIOs to modernize their compute and take their companies to the next level.[i] Source: Forrester Data Global Technographics Data & Analytics Survey, 2017[ii] Source: A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Dell EMC, January 2018.[iii] Source: Forrester Consulting Thought Leadership Checklist Commissioned by Dell EMC, May 2018 Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant dream of the future. It’s here, and it’s changing the way companies do business.Organizations across all industries have embraced AI to help with everyday operations such as customer service, HR, marketing, sales, R&D and more.A recent survey by Forrester reported that over half of companies worldwide have already implemented AI, and another 20 percent plan to do so within the next year.[i] With good reason. The potential impacts are tremendous – improved processes, increased efficiency, automated workloads, greater ROI and countless other benefits. The question is no longer, “Should we embrace AI?” but rather, “How do we best use it to reach our targeted business outcomes?”AI Initiatives are a Top Priority for IT…For IT departments, the concerns are even more pressing. “How do we prepare for the tsunami of AI projects about to hit us from all areas of the business?”IT leaders know that AI is critical to their firm’s long-term success, and most list it as a top business priority for the upcoming year. CIO.com points out that in Gartner’s 2018 CIO Agenda Report, 47 percent of CIOs who have implemented AI report it as “the most pressing pain point”. Still, despite their knowledge and desire to embrace the technology, IT leaders face many challenges. There is no clear playbook or defined path for implementing AI across an enterprise, which means that many are making it up as they go (and, unsurprisingly, stumbling along the way).…But IT Departments are Often the Last to KnowOne of the most common AI issues is the lack of communication between lines of business and IT departments. When it comes to implementing AI projects, IT is often the last to know. In another recent study, Forrester Consulting found that lines of business “completely bypass IT departments 15 percent to 20 percent of the time on their AI initiatives.”[ii] Not only is this lack of communication frustrating, but it’s inefficient and costly. The good news is that IT leaders are well-suited to lead the AI charge across their organizations. Doing so helps to reduce silos and open lines of communication, increase efficiency, and reduce risk – improvements that directly affect the company’s bottom line. In fact, over half of the companies surveyed expect an ROI up to five times their investment.Although there is no magic, one-size-fits-all playbook, there are some clear steps that IT leaders can take to lead the charge toward transforming with AI.As an IT leader, you should focus on the following to prepare for upcoming AI projects: Modernize Data Management Technology – AI initiatives are based on enormous amounts of data, so it makes sense that that IT will require new tools to effectively manage all that data. If your database, data integration, storage capability and networking aren’t up to the task, now is the time to do something about it.Upgrade Infrastructure Hardware – New AI initiatives require faster response, increased storage, higher bandwidth and low-latency networking. Forrester Consulting showed that 61% of firms are challenged by a lack of servers with purpose-built processors, and 81% pointed to the need for new servers for high-performance computing.[iii] You’ll need highly scalable servers with accelerators to reduce model training times.Evaluate Staffing – AI requires a different set of skills to manage than traditional workloads do, and you may need to hire new staff or invest in training current employees. You’ll need skilled workers that can analyze and interpret the massive amounts of data involved.Deploy Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning Platforms – These platforms enable staff to collaborate and streamline projects across different lines of business. Engineers and data scientists will be able to train, deploy, and manage their models and data pipelines more effectively if they are centrally managed by IT.Implement Text Analytics, Natural Language Processing and Speech Analytics Platforms – These applications can be used in multiple ways across sales, marketing, customer service and R&D.
Digital transformation boils down to one simple common denominator: competitiveness in a future “hyper-digital world,” which Dell Technologies predicts in its latest study, the Digital Transformation Index (DTI). In this futurescape, users have extremely demanding requirements. Economic limitations are a thing of the past, meaning that any company can address any market – but it also means that they have to step into the ring with a constantly growing number of competitors. Innovation plays an even more crucial role in this hyper-digital world, and there are completely new challenges, such as climate change and resource scarcity, that the markets have only had fleeting dealings with – if at all – until now. Companies would do well to factor these futuristic parameters into their calculations. However, these parameters are not actually all that “futuristic.” We have all, at one time or another, looked at the clock after midnight and uttered the words, “Oh, it’s already tomorrow.” For the markets, it’s “already tomorrow” as well. In fact, all of the changes mentioned in the previous paragraph have already begun to take place, be it increased user requirements, stronger competition, or climate change. When we talk about the hyper-digital world, then, we are not talking about some sort of abstract future; it has been the here and now for quite some time! It is also not a sudden development (today versus an undefined “tomorrow”), which would maybe please many procrastinators, but an incremental one – the digital society is taking clearer shape with every passing second. This progression is too slow for many to grasp. The procrastinators and the hesitant should take Albert Einstein’s quote to heart: “I never think of the future – it comes soon enough.” Or, even better, update it: “I never think of the digital future – it has long since arrived. If I don’t act now, I’ll quickly lose my competitiveness.” According to Dell’s DTI, only just over a quarter of those surveyed consider their company to be a leader or implementor in the digital transformation, while the remaining almost 75 percent are taking their time – time that they don’t actually have.Given the high number of digital laggards and (perpetual) evaluators, it is no wonder that those surveyed said that in five years’ time, half of all companies will barely meet the requirements of their customers. Many will also no longer be able to present themselves as credible and reliable partners in their markets as they will have fallen behind from a technological standpoint. At this point, it is worth taking a look at the Global Competitiveness Index 2018 from the World Economic Forum. It lists the most competitive countries, notably the U.S. and Singapore, followed by Germany, Switzerland, and the usual suspects. It would not be too far-fetched to conclude that these industrial nationals are investing the most extensively and at the fastest rate in digitization. After all, they have the most expertise and the largest budgets.Way off the mark. According to the DTI, India, Brazil, and Thailand top the list of most digitization-savvy countries. In developed markets, only 24 percent of companies are among the pioneers in this environment, while in India the number is 45. Who would have thought that emerging economies would be the ones demonstrating how digitization is done?I am well aware that more relaxed data protection and other regulatory provisions form less of a barrier for the economic transformation process in many of these countries when compared to the stringent laws in the EU. In fact, data protection, data security, and legal requirements are some of the biggest hurdles on the path to full digitization. Still, it is worth asking one question: Do India and Thailand top the list of most competitive countries in the hyper-digital world because they systematically carry out numerous actual projects alongside the fact that they work with digitization much more intensively? One could assume that developed markets will fall far behind emerging economies when it comes to digitization – but it probably won’t get to that point. All the same, this scenario can still serve as a cautious wake-up call for one company or another. The momentum of today’s emerging economies should be an example to the global markets.
