Trump praises US police, rejecting protesters’ cries of racism

October 19, 2020

first_imgHe did explore some of the deeper causes of racial disparities in the world’s richest country, saying that more would be put into healthcare and the ability to raise business capital in minority communities.Later, in an interview with the generally friendly Fox News network, he described the “horror” of watching Floyd’s death on cellphone footage shot by a witness. But critics say he is incapable of embracing broader public fears, pointing to the contrast between shows of empathy from previous presidents during crises and Trump’s instinct for fighting and insulting foes, even in the midst of calamity.”For weeks we’ve seen President Trump run away from a meaningful conversation on systemic racism and police brutality. Instead, he’s further divided our country,” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday.”Today’s trip to Texas won’t change any of that. President Trump is more interested in photo ops than offering a healing voice as our nation mourns.”Despite his poll numbers being underwater five months ahead of election day, Trump is betting that he needn’t change tack. His base has remained loyal throughout the extraordinary turmoil, and he has made clear his priority is getting back on the campaign trail.Immediately after his remarks in Dallas, the president heads to his first campaign fundraiser since the COVID-19 lockdown began — a $580,600 per couple event. Then he flies to his golf course resort in New Jersey for the weekend, another post-COVID first. On June 19 he will restart his mothballed series of rallies — raucous, often two-hour love fests between Trump the entertainer-in-chief and thousands of his most loyal supporters — with an event in Oklahoma. “We have to work together to confront bigotry and prejudice wherever they appear, but we will make no progress and heal no wounds by falsely labeling tens of millions of decent Americans as racist or bigots,” Trump said. The Republican has struggled to find the right tone to address the explosion of protests over the last two weeks in the wake of the death of an unarmed African-American man, George Floyd, as he was arrested in Minneapolis. That crisis, coupled with the economic devastation of the COVID-19 shutdown — and the fact that the pandemic continues to kill up to 1,000 people a day — has left the country crying out for healing.Trump, whose political style is built largely on fierce division and exciting his right-wing base, faced pressure to encourage unity in Dallas. Magnet for controversy Some Americans may want calm after months of rancor, but that’s one thing the former reality TV star is not giving.Even the choice of Tulsa, Oklahoma, for his resumption of rallies generated controversy.June 19 is known as “Juneteenth,” the day marking the end of slavery in the United States. Tulsa, however, is notorious as the site of a 1921 massacre of African-Americans.As he left for Dallas, Trump lambasted Democratic leaders of Washington state, where he said “domestic terrorists” had taken over Seattle, referring to protesters. He also doubled down on his latest culture wars battle, insisting again he will refuse demands to change the names of US military bases honoring leaders of the slave-owning, rebel South during the Civil War.Back in Washington, there were new tensions between the White House and the military when the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Mark Milley, apologized for appearing alongside Trump during a controversial walk to a church on June 1, minutes after police violently dispersed protesters.”I should not have been there,” Milley said in his unexpected comments. Hitting the trail The choice of Texas for Thursday’s trip was notable because the state — Republican for decades — is turning in to a battleground. Trump won narrowly in 2016 and a Quinnipiac poll last week put him only one percentage point ahead of Biden. In 2016, polls and politics watchers in general got it wrong about Trump, who ran a chaotic campaign against the ultra-professional Hillary Clinton yet still scored a famous electoral college win. This has left many election watchers gun-shy. Even so, current polls make grim reading for the Republican. The FiveThirtyEight average shows Trump’s approval rating at just 41 percent, having taken a big hit from his handling of the COVID-19 and racism crises. The RealClearPolitics average for a presidential election match-up puts Biden at 49.8 to Trump’s 41.7.Worse for Trump — given his hope of repeating his electoral college win, even if losing the overall popular vote — Biden leads in almost every swing state.center_img Topics : US President Donald Trump on Thursday rebooted his flagging reelection campaign with a speech starkly rejecting nationwide protesters’ claims of police racism, saying only a “few bad apples” are to blame.Far from reaching out to demonstrators’ searing anger, he offered only a vague proposal to “encourage” officers to meet “the most current professional standards for the use of force.””You always have a bad apple, no matter where you go,” said Trump, who is making law and order a new keystone of his bid to win a second term on November 3. “There aren’t too many of them in the police department.”last_img read more

Zenit St Petersburg fans are no good and racist – Samba

August 28, 2020

first_imgZenit St Petersburg fans who want non-white and gay players excluded from the Russian team are “living in another century”, says Anzhi Makhachkala defender Christopher Samba.Landscrona, the Russian champions’ largest fans’ group, said black players are “forced down Zenit’s throat”.“I’m not surprised. Everybody knows Zenit supporters are no good and racist,” Samba told BBC Radio 5 live. “They are living in another century. It’s a sad day for Russian football.”He added: “In this time we have different communities and countries that constitute teams. If they can’t accept that then they are never going to progress.”Zenit were the only top-flight Russian team without a black player until the summer signings of Brazil striker Hulk and Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel. The club was fined by the Russian Football Union after one of their fans offered a banana to Anzhi Makhachkala left-back Roberto Carlos before a match between the two sides in March 2011.Black players in the Russian league have been the target of monkey chants and Samba also had a banana thrown at him by a Lokomotiv Moscow fan shortly after his move from Blackburn Rovers. However, the Congo-Brazzaville international insists there is no prospect of black players staging a protest by boycotting matches following Landscrona’s open letter.“Boycotting, why? Because fans make statement they don’t want black players. No. Black players should fight for the good ones – not the idiots,” he said.“It’s really sad. It’s slowing down the process of Russian football being a better league. I hope the Russian federation do the necessary to sanction it.” Raymond Verheijen, a former coach of Zenit, believes there are “serious issues” with racism in Russian football and says action needs to be taken by the sport’s governing body.“If the fans are asking for an all-white team, I’m actually quite shocked to be honest,” he said.“I know, based on my experience with Russian football and Zenit, there are serious issues about racism, so I was already familiar with the problem.“But if it’s true that the fans have asked for this policy then I think its time that the club and the Federation also took some action against these kind of things.”Russia is preparing to host the 2018 World Cup after being picked by governing body Fifa to stage the tournament for the first time. Samba, 28, believes Russia’s continuing problems surrounding racism are “not helping” the country’s preparations. He added: “The fact that a lot of players are going to Russia should be promoted. But if we’re not welcome then it would be very difficult to change the mentality ahead of the World Cup.”last_img read more

‘I think he will stay’ – Leicester chief confident Vardy will reject Arsenal

December 29, 2019

first_img Jamie Vardy is a wanted man after scoring 24 Premier League goals for champions Leicester Premier League champions Leicester City are hopeful striker Jamie Vardy will reject any potential suitors and stay with the Foxes this summer, according to vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.England frontman Vardy scored 24 Premier League goals last season, just one behind golden boot winner Harry Kane, to earn a place in the Three Lions’ Euro 2016 squad. And he’s proved a hit in international level too, having grabbed a vital equaliser in Thursday’s 2-1 win over Wales. His dazzling goalscoring form for club and country has seen him linked with Arsenal, who have reportedly made a £20million bid for the 29-year-old.Vardy recently insisted to press that his future plans remain on hold while he focuses on the tournament, but Srivaddhanaprabha is confident he will still be in blue next season.“You will see the news very soon, but I think he will stay,” the son of Foxes chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha told the Daily Mail.“I think so, let’s see. We need to build the team. We keep continuing to believe that we can do something special in the Premier League and the Champions League.“The Champions League is going to be amazing for Leicester, so let’s see. Leicester is the underdog and we can still be the underdog.”The Thai businessman also admitted he is still “pinching himself” over the team’s achievements under manager Claudio Ranieri, with whom he enjoys a close relationship.“We talk a lot. We are like family,” he said of the charismatic Italian.“I cannot compare myself to another owner but the best thing is we love sport. The first day we talked to the team and we showed that we are doing something we love and that we can succeed.“I think everyone in Leicester is still pinching themselves. Even the players and staff. Now the season is finished and we have to move on.”The Foxes begin their title defence away to Championship play-off winners Hull on August 13. 1last_img read more

HOLY COW! JASON AND JOHNNY GET BEHIND BALLYBOFEY UTD’S COW PAT CHALLENGE

December 27, 2019

first_imgBallybofey United Club NotesCow Pat ChallengeFormer Ballybofey United underage players Johnny Dunleavy and Jason Quigley, pictured with Paul “Ollie” Doherty, were delighted to promote the club’s COW PAT CHALLENGE which was officially launched on Wednesday NIGHTBallybofey United launched their latest fundraising venture on Wednesday night, 17th December. It is known as the “COW PAT CHALLENGE”, and will offer subscribers the chance to win €1,000 for a stake of just €10. Based on the field which the club have secured at Dreenan for their new pitch the “CHALLENGE” will see the field divided into squares. Subscribers buy a square for €10. Subscribers are randomly allocated a square in the field. When the squares are all sold at date and time will be made public for the “CHALLENGE”. On that day a Cow will be allowed into the field. Under observation by many stakeholders the Cow carefully monitored. Wherever the Cow decides to leave it’s first “Pat” will be marked and the owner of that square will win the €1,000. It really is as simple as that. This venture will be important to the future development of the club and it is hoped that the public support it and maybe even come along on the day for a bit of craic. €1,000 would come in handy at the start of 2015 so gets you square from any club member from Thursday onwards.  Christmas Break:With the Leagues all now closed for the Christmas Holidays there will be no training for underage players until they are notified by their team managers. The underage games were all cancelled at the weekend due to frozen pitches however the Senior team did manage to play their match against Raphoe Town. In an entertaining game the points were shared but Ballybofey will feel that they should have won the match on the balance of play. Calvin Mc Gowan got the Ballybofey goal. Special mention for Chris Patton who made two top drawer saves and Ronan Mc Menamin who continues to get better with every match at Senior Level. Ronan has played with the club since under-8 and is a perfect example of how underage players can become Senior players by committing to their club and working hard in training.25 Card-Drive: The club are continuing their fundraising efforts as they strive to deliver their new facilities at Dreenan. John Kelly won the 25 Card Drive which the club held in Meenreagh Social Centre on Sunday night. There was a great turnout in support of the club. PJ Browne and Jude Patton shared 2nd prize while George Michael Sproule got the Bubbie Prize. Many thanks to Patricia, Sian and Amy for the tea and Mrs. Roulston & Mrs. Moss for their lovely baking.Friends of Ballybofey United:The “Friends of Ballybofey United” initiative continues to grow in popularity. This is open to everyone and individuals as well as businesses have been joining the scheme. The two most recent “Friends” to sign up are two of the club’s underage players from days no too long gone bye, Johnny Dunleavy, who in now captain of Cork City, and Jason Quigley who has turned professional in the sport of Boxing. Although based at the other end of the Country and in America respectively both lads keep in daily contact with the Twin Towns and keep up to date with the results from the Ballybofey United underage and Senior matches. Both lads signed up to the “Friends” scheme on Sunday afternoon last while on a visit home. HOLY COW!
